About The River Blackwater Special Area of Conservation

The River Blackwater Special Area of Conservation (SAC) in Northern Ireland is a designated protected site under the European Union's Habitats Directive. Spanning a significant stretch of the River Blackwater, it covers an important riverine environment that supports a variety of rare and protected habitats as well as species. Geographically, it flows through Counties Armagh and Tyrone, passing through rural landscapes with a mixture of agricultural land and woodlands. The River Blackwater SAC is internationally recognized for its unspoiled waterways and the vital refuge it offers to species such as Atlantic salmon, otters, and freshwater pearl mussels—all species requiring high-quality clean water and natural river structure to thrive.

Ecologically, the area contains fast-flowing waters, clean gravel beds, and adjacent riparian vegetation, making it an ideal environment for breeding and feeding. The river's aquatic plants and associated wetland areas contribute to the biodiversity of the site, also supporting fish species like the brook lamprey and sea lamprey. Historically, the River Blackwater has played a role in local livelihoods through fishing and small mill operations, although now it is primarily valued for conservation and outdoor recreation.

Visitors to the SAC can engage in birdwatching, wildlife photography, fishing (subject to permits and local regulations), and walking along accessible paths adjacent to the river. The river corridor offers peaceful natural settings with opportunities to observe otters and kingfishers. While the area is not a formal national park or forest, it remains a critical natural resource managed carefully to conserve its sensitive freshwater ecosystems. The River Blackwater SAC attracts eco-tourists, anglers, and nature lovers interested in experiencing one of Northern Ireland's important freshwater conservation areas.
